Interpreting Certificate - Court

The certificate from this program is recognized as proof of accreditation by the Ministry of the Attorney General, Court Services. Established in 1979, this part-time program enables bilingual speakers to obtain practical training in interpreting techniques, legal terminologyand procedures. The program prepares participants to work as accredited court interpreters, as well as providing an excellent preparation for other interpreting jobs. Through court observation, lectures, simulated courtroom situations and interpretation practice in small language-specific classes, close individual instruction is offered.

The program has been designed in direct response to the needs of the courts, and meets the Canadian national standards of excellence in training. The Advisory Committee to the program includes representatives of the legal and judicial system, as well as practitioners in the profession.

10 months of part-time study. 300 classroom hours in addition to home study and assignments (Bursaries are available). Tuition: $3,340.00, $5,010.00 International Students.

Admission Requirements

General

VCC welcomes applications from Canadian citizens, permanent residents and international students.

Exceptions
Convention refugees as designated by the federal government;

Foreign live-in caregivers;

Individuals with work permits valid for at least one year, covering the duration of studies; or those with Approval in Principle letters from Citizenship and Immigration Canada;

Legal dependents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents (certain conditions apply);

Diplomats and their direct dependents;

International exchange students.

VCC will require proof of citizenship, residency, diplomatic or refugee status. Please see VCC's policy relating to admission for non-citizens and non-residents for more information.

As Vancouver Community College is a post-secondary institution committed to educating adult learners, applicants should be 18 years of age or older or a graduate of a secondary school.

Program Specific:

- Introduction to Translation and Interpreting (INTR 1192)

- Candidates should have post-secondary education (at least 2nd year College or University), good hearing and an aptitude for interpreting. For international students or students whose first language is not English, we recommend a TOEFL score of 570 or higher, or a VCC Assessment (ELA) of 145/200 or higher. The Canadian Language Benchmarks should be a minimum of Benchmark 8 for Writing, and Benchmark 9 for Listening & Speaking.
