Civil/Structural Technician Certificate (formerly Drafting)

Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) and 3D Building Information Modelling (BIM) are increasingly being used in the development of structures, highway construction, high rise and commercial buildings. Through project-based learning, with instructional presentations and laboratory work, students will learn the latest CAD and BIM software (such as Autodesk Revit Structure, AutoCAD and Civil 3D software); trades skills that are essential in a career as a Civil/Structural Technician.

Program Hours: The Civil/Structural Technician Certificate program runs Monday to Friday from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm.

Program Description

Program Description

This is one of the five drafting programs available at VCC. In the first two months, students learn concepts, techniques and accepted practices in the drafting industry. Students learn computer-aided drafting and are introduced to specialty areas of drafting.

In the final eight months of the program graduates of this program will have developed the drafting and 3D Building Information Modeling (BIM) skills which will enable them to enter the workforce in many areas as team members in consulting engineering firms, architectural firms, municipal, provincial or federal offices, as well as in private industry. Graduates will be prepared to work on a wide variety of structures, highway construction, high rise and commercial buildings, and development work.

Upon completion of the initial 10 month Civil/Structural Technician Certificate, a VCC diploma may be earned by completing a second drafting specialty (terms 2 & 3, 8 months training) in either Steel Detailing or Architectural.

This course uses project based learning strategies with instructional presentations and laboratory work using Autodesk Revit Structure software. Students may be required to do assignments at home and lab work outside class time on both theory and individual projects.
