Description
This course introduces the discipline of sociology, its major social theories and research methods, to study social structure and social processes, with an emphasis on formal organizations, culture and identity, and social stratification. The main theories in sociology are employed to examine the following areas: socialization, organizations and bureaucracy, gender and sexuality, culture and mass media, deviance and crime, race and ethnicity, and social stratification and inequality in a Canadian and global context.
SOCI 1100 and SOCI 1200 can be taken concurrently or in any order.

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Apply the scientific method in sociological analyses.
- Compare and contrast the major concepts and theories employed in sociology.
- Compare the strengths and weaknesses of the major approaches and research methods in sociology.
- Apply research findings in written and oral sociology topics.
- Apply sociological theory and research to observations and analysis of human behavior and society.
- Apply critical thinking skills to knowledge construction in society, and other societal structures and processes.
- Apply knowledge of society, socialization, organizations, sex and gender, culture, mass media, deviance, education, and social stratification and inequality in sociological analyses.
- Integrate theory and demographic data on class, race/ethnicity, gender, and age-based stratification issues into knowledge constructions of society.
- Apply information literacy skills and effective information seeking techniques in sociological research.
- Critically evaluate sociological journal articles.
