Description
Students will be introduced to the study of pharmacology and therapeutics. Students will explore general concepts of how drugs affect the body, routes of drug administration and dosage forms. Students will study drugs affecting the nervous, musculo-skeletal, respiratory and cardiovascular system, focusing on their therapeutic uses and potential side effects. Students also examine the proper use of various medical devices. As part of a holistic approach to care, students will explore health practices of Indigenous peoples in Canada.

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Discuss the principles of pharmacology. (1)
- Discuss the principles of pharmacokinetics. (2)
- Discuss the principles of toxicology. (3)
- Describe the routes of drug administration. (4)
- Differentiate between dosage forms. (5)
- Discuss the pathophysiology of common diseases and disorders of the neurology, psychiatry, musculoskeletal, respiratory, and cardiovascular body systems. (6)
- Recall the generic and brand names of commonly used drugs for the neurology, psychiatry, musculoskeletal, respiratory, and cardiovascular body systems. (7)
- Identify the therapeutic uses of commonly used drugs for the neurology, psychiatry, musculoskeletal, respiratory, and cardiovascular body systems. . (8)
- List the side effects of commonly used drugs for the neurology, psychiatry, musculoskeletal, respiratory, and cardiovascular body systems. . (9)
- Demonstrate the use of basic medical devices. (10)
- Identify a variety of traditional and cultural healthcare practices used by Indigenous peoples of Canada. (11)
