Description
This course combines essential communication skills with foundational workplace safety. Students will improve clear and productive communication, crucial for client interactions and team collaboration. Concurrently, the course covers basic safety concepts including the Workers Compensation Act, general trade safety, proper body mechanics, fire safety, and hazardous material identification, with specific attention to the Refrigeration field. The goal is to equip students with core competencies for academic and career success.

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Describe workplace safety responsibilities under WCB regulations, including those related to the WCB Act, specific trade rules (piping and refrigeration), hazardous materials handling, and WHMIS obligations.
- Apply proper safety procedures when using hand and power tools, and for shop safety equipment and lockout.
- Identify fire classes and extinguishing methods relevant to a workplace setting.
- Demonstrate knowledge of hazardous materials safety, including WCB regulations for handling and storing them, and general safety precautions.
- Describe technical information found in safety manuals and reports specific to the refrigeration field.
- Implement effective study and time-management techniques tailored to individual learning styles and environments.
Prior Learning Assessment & Recognition (PLAR)
Methods of assessment may include a challenge exam, submission of a product or portfolio for review, or a practical demonstration. Please contact the Department for details.

Instructional Strategies
