Description
This course focuses on the roles and responsibilities of Medical Laboratory Assistant in the public and private laboratory sectors. Medical-legal, ethical and professional approaches to work are discussed. Safe laboratory practices, including infection control, electrical and fire safety as well as WHMIS are described and practised in a laboratory setting. Other topics include quality assurance programs, purchasing and inventory control systems as well as reception and clerical skills. Preparation for employment is also included in this course.

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Explain the role of the Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) in a medical laboratory.
- Describe the organization and functions of the medical laboratory.
- Explain medical-legal, ethical and professional standards required as an employee in a medical laboratory.
- Perform the duties of a MLA using approved safety and infection control standards.
- Describe quality assurance programs used in medical laboratories.
- Use purchasing and inventory control systems used in medical laboratories.
- Perform reception and clerical skills required in medical laboratories.
- Prepare for employment as a medical laboratory assistant in a medical laboratory.
