Description
Students will explore the practice of pharmacy within institutional settings. Building on the foundational knowledge and skills gained in PHAR 1106 Community Pharmacy, this course allows students to apply their understanding of dispensing procedures and pharmacy operations to the institutional environment. Students will discuss different distribution systems and the delivery of healthcare services in hospitals. During the lab portion of the course, students will expand their skills in maintaining accurate records, prescription dispensing, hospital pharmacy equipment, and quality assurance.

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Describe professional pharmacy practice in hospitals. (1)
- Differentiate between the scope of practice of a pharmacist and a pharmacy technician in a hospital. (5)
- Describe the evolving role of the pharmacy technician in hospital practice including specialty areas. (2)
- Differentiate between types of hospitals. (3)
- Describe the organizational structure of a hospital. (4)
- Prepare drugs safely and accurately in all types of hospital distribution systems. (6)
- Use hospital pharmacy dispensing software. (7)
- Maintain records and equipment in hospitals. (8)
- Employ quality assurance procedures in the lab. (9)
