Description
This course teaches how to understand business law and the implications of governmental controls as they impact upon business and office operations. Topics include legal systems, contracts, property, business entities, local statutes, domestic policy, and tariffs and quotas.
This course is part of the Executive Assistant (Part-time) program.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Communicate effectively, using the vocabulary and concepts commonly used by legal and business professionals.
- Explain the basic structures of Canadian law and the legal system; and also understand the main steps in a criminal or civil case in the Supreme Court of BC
- Demonstrate a familiarity with the main concepts and ways of thinking and working used in the areas of law and business discussed above in the week by week outline.
- Identify the relevant statutes, both provincial and federal, as they apply to business in British Columbia, and be aware of the practical ramifications of these statutes.
- Identify – and perhaps even to draft – simple contractual clauses, and to understand the impact of commonly used business clauses.
- Explain the basic concepts behind tort law and the role of tort law in society.
- Be aware of the Sale of Goods Act and consumer protection law and its practical consequences for those wishing to carry on business in BC.
- Understand of the main duties of employer and employee in the working relationship and guide their working behaviour appropriately.
- Define an agent and be aware of the duties that agents and principals have to each other and to third parties.
- Understand the basic advantages and disadvantages of the various forms of business and the legal requirements of each form.
- Explain the impact of law upon a business person dealing with real, personal or intellectual property.
