DRFT 2205: Reality Capture & Digital Site Modeling
Effective date
September 2027
School
Trades, Technology and Design
Description
Students are introduced to digital site data capture technologies used in modern construction and infrastructure projects. Students learn to collect, process, and visualize spatial data using tools such as 3D laser scanning, airborne LiDAR, drone imagery, and mixed and augmented reality applications. Emphasis is placed on practical workflows for interpreting site information, generating digital terrain models, and integrating spatial data into CAD and BIM environments. Students gain experience transforming raw survey data into actionable information used for site analysis, infrastructure design, and project visualization.
Year of study
2nd Year Post-secondary
Prerequisites
DRFT 2101 and DRFT 2103.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Explain the role of digital survey technologies in construction and infrastructure projects.
- Use appropriate methods to capture site and project data using appropriate methods selected to meet project needs, which may include using 3D laser scanning, drone imagery, and airborne LiDAR workflows.
- Integrate digital survey data into CAD and BIM environments for design and planning.
- Apply mixed and augmented reality tools to visualize site conditions and project information.
- Produce a digital site model incorporating survey data and terrain analysis.
