Description
Students learn their rights and responsibilities in the workplace according to local, Provincial and National safety regulations and to identify job hazards and provide a safe workplace. The course focuses on Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems (WHMIS), fire prevention, personal protective equipment (PPE), emergency procedures and environmental safety such as hazardous material handling, storage and disposal. Additionally, students are introduced to vehicle hazards such as alternate fuel and electric vehicles, supplemental Restraint Systems (SRS).

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Describe workers rights and responsibilities in the workplace according to local, Provincial and National safety regulations and to identify job hazards and provide a safe workplace.
- Create and maintain a safe environment when performing work duties in the workplace in compliance with local, Provincial and National safety regulations.
- Describe vehicle hazards and precautions associated with vehicle handling and repair processes.
- Describe fire safety prevention, extinguishing and storage procedures and equipment according to local, Provincial and National safety regulations and fire safety standards.
- Use the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) in the workplace in compliance with Provincial and National regulations.
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety equipment in the workplace in compliance with Provincial and National regulations.

Instructional Strategies
Instructional strategies include: Self-paced and scheduled online learning assignments, lectures, demonstrations, group work, individual work, field trips, and project work in an authentic shop environment.
