CCAC 1084: Communications for Health Sciences

Description
Communications for Health Sciences is designed to prepare students for success in the following health science programs: Practical Nursing, Health Unit Coordinator, Dental Assisting, Pharmacy Technician, Occupational/Physical Therapist Assistant, Medical Lab Assistant, Medical Office Assistant, and Medical Device Reprocessing Technician.
Students who complete this course will meet the Language Proficiency Requirements to enter any of these programs. After completing individualized assignments, students will meet the Grade 12 English equivalent.
Receiving departments have agreed to accept CCA statements of success in lieu of retaking the required ABE assessments.

Prerequisites
Completion of WRSK 0826 or ABE Assessment scores of 55 (reading), 43 (grammar) and 0871 (writing sample).
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Evaluate argument for validity, reliability, currency and objectivity
- Interact effectively in formal or informal situations
- Adjust speaking style to suit audience, purpose, and situation
- Use effective presentation aids to enhance communications
- Deliver a research-based oral presentation to inform or persuade and respond effectively to feedback
- Give and respond effectively to feedback during oral presentations
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of arguments
- Summarize, make inferences, draw conclusions and critically evaluate
- Paraphrase main ideas in written material
- Use a variety of strategies and sources to gather and evaluate information, including print sources, library resources and the Internet
- Write a grammatically correct, structurally sound and organized essay
