Description
This course introduces the learner to the fundamentals and principles of microbiology and the responsibility of the Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) for infection control. Office experience and a detailed research project assist in the assimilation of the critical concepts.

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Describe the fundamentals of microbiology.
- Define terminology related to microbiology and infection prevention and control in dentistry.
- Describe the levels of infection prevention and control.
- Describe diseases of concern to dentistry.
- Describe asepsis, including use and function of sterilization equipment and processes.

Instructional Strategies
This online, asynchronous course is offered with instructor support via web-based communication, email and a learning management system (LMS). Instructional strategies include but are not limited to case studies, research and online activities.
