Description
This course introduces the learner to health hazards in dentistry. Protocols and procedures to assist in the prevention of medical emergencies for staff and patients are explored in this course. The role of the Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) in dental office medical emergencies is also examined.

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Describe dental office emergency situations and procedures for their prevention.
- Explain the roles of the individual dental team members during an emergency.
- Discuss drug use in dentistry.
- Discuss drug dispensing protocols.
- Discuss emergency kits and the protocols for maintenance in the dental office.
- Discuss pharmaceutical safety practices.
Prior Learning Assessment & Recognition (PLAR)
PLAR is assessed through a challenge exam.

Instructional Strategies
This online course is offered with instructor support via web-based communication, email and a learning management system (LMS). Instructional strategies include but are not limited to case studies, research and online activities.
