Description
This course introduces students to the function of the human body and the anatomical features of the hard and soft tissues in the head and neck. Students will also learn about tooth morphology, hygiene and health promotion to avoid infection and cross-contamination.

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate an awareness of biology and of head and neck anatomy related to dental technology practice.
- Identify the basic elements of skeletal anatomy, musculature, physiology, and tooth morphology as they relate to the design and fabrication of dental prosthetics.
- Explain principles of oral microbiology, infection, cross-infection, and general laboratory hygiene relevant to the practice of dental technology.
- Define the structure and function of the teeth and supporting tissues, tooth arrangement, and tooth numbering systems.
- Demonstrate an awareness of the impact of dental health and functionality on a patient’s overall health.

Course topics
- Dental terminology, annotation and basic characteristics of teeth
- Structure and function of the human body
- Head and neck and soft tissues of the edentulous and dentulous oral cavity
- Development and eruption of teeth. Determinants of occlusion
- Anatomical features of deciduous teeth including basic features of occlusion
- Anatomical features of permanent teeth including basic features of occlusion
- Temporomandibular joint and the paranasal sinuses
- Muscles of mastication, facial expression and tongue, blood vessels of the head and neck and nerves of the head and neck
- Dental laboratory hygiene; and the principles of health promotion and principles of preventive dentistry
