Description
This course will assist learners in gaining knowledge about the relationship between health and disease of the oral tissues. Emphasis will be placed on oral pathology, immunology, microbiology, periodontology, and associated treatment modalities.

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Explain the role of microorganisms in health and in the disease process related to oral and peri-oral tissues.
- Describe effects of the immune response on oral and peri-oral tissues.
- Explain the etiology, histopathogenesis and clinical manifestations of periodontal diseases and oral pathologies.
- Explain the clinical interventions and outcomes of care associated with periodontal diseases and oral pathologies.
- Integrate knowledge of general and oral health sciences to support the dental hygiene process of care.
- Integrate critical thinking and systematic inquiry to investigate oral health issues relative to dental hygiene practice.

Instructional Strategies
