Description
This course enables learners to develop and apply foundational knowledge, skills and attitudes in population and public health principles and strategies to a novice level that enable individuals, groups, communities and populations to improve their health and well-being and reduce inequities. This course prepares the learner for Community Practice.

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Explain the dental hygienist's role in improving the health and well-being of the public within communities using a determinants of health framework.
- Explain population and public health theory and practice.
- Discuss health promotion and disease prevention principles and strategies for improving the health and well-being of the public using a population health approach recognizing cultural safety, client advocacy, community capacity building, political action, and community development.
- Analyze political, economic and social marketing influences affecting community dental hygiene practice.
- Apply educational theories, principles and learning strategies for improving the health and well-being of the public.
- Develop a simulated community program using an interprofessional appraoch to improve the health and well-being of communities.

Instructional Strategies
