Description
This course presents a comprehensive overview of human development from conception through five years of age with particular emphasis on the early childhood years. Course content focuses on current research, trends, and issues, and introduces students to the importance of observation and individual variations in the developmental process.

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Explain the key developmental theories from birth to age five – historical and current
- Describe a range of historic and current theoretical approaches to child growth and development
- Describe the developmental domains from prenatal to five years (physical, social/emotional, cognitive, language)
- Discuss genetic and environmental influences related to child growth and development
- Analyze children’s activities from different perspectives of developmental theory
