ELSK 0515: ESL Listening and Speaking 5
Description
The focus of ESL Listening and Speaking 5 is on developing oral communication skills in English. Classroom activities engage learners in developing listening and speaking strategies for community, workplace and academic contexts. Learners integrate language skills, Skills for Success (Working with Others, Computer and Document Use, Thinking Skills, and Continuous Learning), and inter-cultural skills. By the end of this course, learners will be able to meet the Listening and Speaking outcomes at Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) 5 level.
Note: Reading and Writing courses are closely aligned with Listening and Speaking courses.
Prerequisites
LINC 4; or Assessment scores of CLB 4 Listening and CLB 4 Speaking; or equivalent https://www.vcc.ca/applying/registration-services/english-language-proficiency-requirements/ or Department approval.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Identify speakers, situations and language in common social situations
- Follow 7-8 steps in instructions or directions
- Recognize and interpret everyday communication that gives advice, opinions or suggestions
- Recognize, analyze and interpret information about familiar or relevant topics
- Identify key words, facts and opinions in informal presentations up to 5 minutes long
- Participate in basic social conversations with a friend or classmate
- Participate in very short phone calls
- Give instructions and directions for everyday activities
- Make and respond to informal suggestions and advice
- Ask for and give information related to routine daily activities in one-on-one interactions
- Agree, disagree and give opinions in small group discussions
- Give presentations (up to 5 minutes) about events or daily routines

Instructional Strategies
The instructor uses multiple strategies to achieve the learning outcomes including: ongoing needs analysis, group work, using audio/computer labs, coaching, one-on-one consultations, case studies, videos, lectures, demonstrations, etc.
