ELSK 0520: ESL Reading and Writing 5
Description
The focus of ESL Reading and Writing 5 is on developing reading and writing communication skills in English. Classroom activities engage students in developing reading and writing strategies using community, workplace and academic contexts. Learners integrate language skills, Skills for Success (Working with Others, Computer and Document Use, Thinking Skills, and Continuous Learning), and intercultural skills. By the end of this course, students will be able to meet the Reading and Writing outcomes at the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 5 level.
Note: Reading and Writing courses are closely aligned with the topics in Listening and Speaking courses.
Prerequisites
LINC 4; or Assessment scores of CLB 4 Reading and CLB 4 Writing; or equivalent https://www.vcc.ca/applying/registration-services/english-language-proficiency-requirements/ or Department approval.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Find the main ideas and details of common personal and public social messages
- Follow 7-10 step-by-step written instructions with pictures for everyday tasks
- Scan charts, tables or websites to find and use 1-2 pieces of information
- Find information in business texts
- Identify how descriptions and stories about common topics are organized and connected
- Interpret and use information in diagrams, tables, graphs, and website menus
- Get basic information from the internet or table of contents
- Write 1-2 paragraph formal or informal personal messages for social purposes
- Take messages or notes with 5-7 details while listening to a recording
- Make a list of important points after reading something
- Write one paragraph for a business or service to take care of everyday personal needs
- Complete forms requiring 20-30 details of personal information
- Write one paragraph to describe a person, object, or usual event

Instructional Strategies
The instructor uses multiple strategies to achieve the learning outcomes, including: ongoing needs analysis, group work, coaching, one-on-one consultations, using audio/computer labs, case studies, videos, lectures, demonstrations, etc.

- Planning for Lifelong Learning (take notes on and write about different learning styles, read a brochure, fill in a registration form)
- Reading Instructions (read how to safely perform a basic task, read a chart, write a paragraph)
- Reporting Incidents (read and write about work-related incidents)
- Writing Workplace Emails (read a letter, write emails to ask for advice and give a response)
- Responding to Texts (read and write about Indigenous languages, search for information, take notes)
- Reading and Writing Paragraphs (read an e-mail, write a paragraph about a note-worthy person)
- Researching (search a local website, search a directory, fill in a government form)
- Finding Information (search a website and take notes, write an email expressing interest)
