ELSK 0715: ESL Listening and Speaking 7
Description
The focus of ESL Listening and Speaking 7 is on developing oral communication skills in English. Classroom activities engage learners in developing listening and speaking strategies for community, workplace and academic contexts. Learners integrate language skills, Skills for Success (Working with Others, Computer and Document Use, Thinking Skills, and Continuous Learning), and inter-cultural skills. By the end of this course, learners will be able to meet the Listening and Speaking outcomes at Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) 7 level.
Note: The topics in this course are closely aligned with the topics in ESL Reading and Writing 7.
Prerequisites
ESL Listening and Speaking 6; or LINC 6; or Assessment scores of CLB 6 Listening and CLB 6 Speaking; or equivalent https://www.vcc.ca/applying/registration-services/english-language-proficiency-requirements/ or Department approval.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Identify mood, purpose and register in social interactions; identify and interpret information in the interaction
- Identify and infer order of steps in directions and instructions with 10 to 12 steps
- Identify purpose, details, and implied meanings to interpret communication intended to influence or persuade for personal or common experiences
- Identify register, mood and purpose, and follow short group interactions, discussions and meetings on familiar topics
- Identify main ideas and details in informal presentations that describe something or tell a story of up to 15 minutes
- Participate in and maintain common social conversations for many everyday purposes
- Participate in routine phone calls about familiar matters
- Give instructions and directions for different procedures
- Give detailed suggestions and advice
- Communicate detailed information expressing approval, disapproval, ideas and reservations in one-on-one and in small group discussions or meetings
- Give presentations up to 10 minutes to describe something in detail

The instructor uses multiple strategies to achieve the learning outcomes including: ongoing needs analysis, group work, coaching, one-on-one consultations, using audio/computer labs, case studies, videos, lectures, demonstrations, etc.

- Empathizing (discuss a personal issue, role-play a personal scenario)
- Learning New Skills (watch and participate in group discussion on technology challenges, comprehend instructions, demonstrate how to use a piece of software)
- Interviewing (watch disappointing and successful job interviews, role-play a telephone conversation, participate in a mock job interview)
- Planning for Professional Development (watch a video with a successful entrepreneur, give suggestions and advice, give instructions on goal-planning)
- Negotiating Conflict (listen to news on a community issue, discuss group presentations, negotiate a solution)
- Negotiating Hierarchy (watch a "water-cooler" conversation, watch a workplace video, role-play scenarios)
- Presenting in Teams (plan a presentation in a group, listen to presentation basics, give team presentations)
- Networking (invite someone to a networking event, give feedback on networking skills, participate in a networking event)
