ELSK 1004: CELBAN Test Prep

Description
Canadian English Language Benchmark Assessment for Nurses (CELBAN) Test Prep is a short testpreparation course for those internationally educated nurses who are applying for licensure either to the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of BC (CLPNBC) or to the College of Registered Nurses of BC (CRNBC) and who are required to demonstrate English language proficiency in the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing before entry to practice in the Canadian workplace.

Prerequisites
Be an internationally-trained nurse AND CLBPT/CLB 8 or above for Listening and CLB 7 or above for Reading; OR English Language Assessment with minimum 25 in Listening and 36 in Reading; OR IELTS score of minimum 6.5 in Listening and 6.0 in Reading; OR Department approval.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Describe the CELBAN test format and style
- Apply test taking strategies for success on the CELBAN Test
- Use strategies to improve English language proficiency
- Identify Canadian Language Benchmarks levels required for success on the CELBAN test

Instructional Strategies
Instructional strategies include demonstration, test simulation, written feedback, audio/video recording,
independent practice (Moodle), and group/partner practice.

- writing short reports and summaries

- skimming, scanning
- reading formatted and un-formatted texts
