Description
This 17 week course introduces the learner to the fundamentals prepares students for the skills required for future courses. Students will learn how to use and maintain tools, maintain a safe and hygienic environment with awareness of health and safety standards and regulations. In addition, students will learn service preparation and hair and scalp services. Learners will be introduced to the foundation of hair cutting techniques with a variety of cutting tools, styling techniques,dry finishing. Students will be introduced to the fundamental principles of colouring hair, permanent waving, how to assess client needs, analyze face shapes, recommend services, time lines and pricing and how to recognize possible diseases and disorders. Students will also be introduced to industry expectations around professionalism and will learn how to demonstrate professional behavior and communication skills with clients and coworkers.

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Identify what qualifies a single-use tool and accessories and how to use and maintain them.
- Recognize the need for disinfecting and how to sanitize and disinfect tools and equipment using specific materials and procedures.
- Prepare clients for services and the various types of draping techniques.
- Perform scalp massage, analyze the scalp and hair, practice scalp manipulations and identify the benefits.
- Identify the structure and functions of the skin and the composition of hair in addition to recognizing possible disease and disorders.
- Demonstrate professional behavior and communication skills with clients and co-workers.
- Demonstrate wet hair styling by using a combination of styling techniques and the art of dry and finishing styling by using thermal tools and comb-out techniques.
- Demonstrate accurate sectioning, basic perm wrap patterns, directional perm wraps, tool placement and procedures for applying permanent waving chemicals.
- Identify basic colour formulation and application techniques suitable for specific client colour needs.
- Describe the procedure to perform bleach application and recognize degrees of lightening.
- Determine where excess hair needs to be removed and perform the fundamental hair cutting techniques of elevated and non-elevated haircuts.
- Perform men’s grooming including how to cut facial and nape hair.
