Description
The Foot Care Nursing course provides basic and advanced education and training in the care of the middle-aged and elderly foot. This course includes in-class instruction, self-study and hands-on clinical experience. Students will typically work on 8-10 feet during the course. In addition to education for providing basic and advanced foot care, the student will learn the basics of private practice nursing and operating a small business, as well as the current best practices for cleaning, disinfecting and sterilizing foot care tools.
Proof of current BC LPN or RN Licensure to register.
Supplies costing approximately $550 are available at the VCC Downtown bookstore prior to first class. Please note that a textbook is required for this course. Please check the bookstore website at https://downtown.store.vcc.ca/ for textbook information and hours of operation.

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Describe the role of the nurse in giving foot care to elderly clients
- Describe the normal structure and function of feet and the effects of aging on foot health
- Explain common conditions of aging feet and appropriate nursing interventions for each condition 4
- Relate how diabetes mellitus affects foot health
- Carry out assessment of an elderly person’s feet
- Describe and demonstrate principles of safe and appropriate care of elderly feet
- Recognize components of complete documentation of nursing foot care
- Describe and use tools, equipment, and supplies used in giving nursing foot care, including appropriate use, care, and maintenance
- Describe the best practices for cleaning, disinfecting and sterilizing foot care equipment
- Discuss the various tasks required in planning a successful private nursing foot care practice

Assignments (40%), Final Exam (50%), Participation (10%) Clinical (Satisfactory / Unsatisfactory) Students must receive at least 75% and S in the clinical portion in order to pass the course. Attendance on all Theory and Clinical Days is mandatory.
