Description
This course introduces students to contemporary issues in labour relations management in the hospitality industry in Canada. Students will gain an understanding of the legal, social, economic and political framework and complexities within which labor relations operate within the service sector.
This course is part of the full-time Bachelor of Hospitality Management program.

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Describe the key differences between union and non-union workplaces.
- Explain the implications of the social and political environment for labour relations processes.
- Describe the nature and significance of present-day union membership.
- Identify the labour relations processes and strategies used by employers.
- Explain how governments interact with unions, labour boards and other parties.
- Describe the significance of a union obtaining bargaining rights.
- Explain the effect a collective agreement could have on human resource management.
- Identify the determinants and significance of bargaining structure.
- Assess the significance and functions of the grievance and arbitration process.
- Explain methods to resolve contract disputes.
- Identify the functions of strikes and lockouts.
- Outline the development of labour relations in the public sector.
- Explain the effects of unionization on union and non-union employers.
- Adhere to the Canadian Labour Relations act when managing labour relations.
- Identify and analyze the issues in a workplace conflict, prepare a brief (where appropriate based on policies and the collective agreement) and present the brief to the appropriate HR officer in the organization.
- Apply ethical decision making when managing labour relations.
