Description
This course is intended for apprentices seeking to enter the hair industry and provides students with a thorough up-to-date hairstylist training experience with both fundamental theory and practical techniques. It includes customized cutting and shaving, style up-dos and additions, chemical straightening and colour correction. It also incorporates business practices. Students train in classrooms and a state of the art salon at VCC's Downtown campus, with ample opportunity to practice their skills and to demonstrate their knowledge.
Upon completion of this course apprentices will seek sponsorship and enter into the industry with an increased and comprehensive skill set. Students will then be eligible to enroll in the Hairstylist Level 2 Apprenticeship course once they have completed the SkilledTradesBC standardized written exam.

Prerequisites
Students must be registered in the hairstylist trade and have an active apprenticeship record with SkilledTradesBC.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Describe the importance of sanitation & disinfection when working in a salon environment and sanitize, disinfect tools and equipment correctly
- Describe, use and maintain different types of tools and equipment used for cutting, styling, colouring, perming and business needs
- Describe and demonstrate effective communication with clients and co-workers including consultations and analysis
- Prepare, shampoo, massage and condition hair and scalp using correct techniques
- Identify and cut hair using specific tools and techniques
- Prepare, Style and finish hair looks and trends
- Chemically wave and perm hair
- Identify, prepare, colour and bleach hair and describe the procedure for colour correction
- Describe the principles of applying and styling wigs, hair pieces and extensions
- Identify all salon business operations, financial transactions, inventory, and marketing strategies
- Demonstrate conflict management skills to assisted in the resolution of client concerns and complaints
