Description
The course begins with an overview of the Canadian and BC healthcare systems. Students are introduced to a variety of practical administrative skills including management of electronic and paper-based medical records, and appointment scheduling. Reception and telephone management and duties, patient communication, legislation, and best practices relating to privacy and confidentiality are given particular attention. The course introduces students to the theory and practice of electronic medical records (EMR).

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Use software applications to manage patient records, schedule appointments and manage inventory for medical and office supplies
- Apply problem-solving, critical thinking, decision-making, and information literacy skills in practice
- Research the health system legislation and medicolegal standards
- Comply with relevant medicolegal standards and legislation and workplace codes of conduct in practice
- Communicate professionally with patients and health professionals, incorporating empathy and an understanding of cultural humility and inclusivity into all patient interactions
- Identify reliable, evidence-informed resources for health information and reference
- Identify community health resources available for patient use.
