MUSC 1203: Materials of Music

Description
A team taught course that provides an overview of academic music theory and basic skills, including review of basic terms and materials, counterpoint and harmonic skills. The course combines systems, terms and approaches from both classical and jazz repertoires. Classes include large-group lectures, labs and extensive skill-building testing. 1103 = 3:1:0, 1203 = 3:0:1

Prerequisites
Basic Theory of Music 1003 or equivalent. For entrance into 1203, a score of 80% or higher on the rudiments section of the 1103 final exam in required.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Identify, describe and use nonharmonic tones
- Identify, describe and use all diatonic seventh chords in major & minor
- Identify and describe all triads, seventh and sixth chords using jazz/pop nomenclature
- Identify, describe and use secondary V7 and Vllo7 chords
- Identify, describe and use modulation
- Identify, describe and use 9th, 11th, and 13th chords
- Identify, describe and use neapolitan and augmented sixth chords
- Identify, describe and analyze harmonic progressions in the context of the harmonization of melodies
- identify and describe voice leading, figured bass, and roman numeral analysis in the context of 4-part chorale, keyboard, and instrumental trio or quartet textures
- Analyze aurally phrase and cadence types
- Identify and describe small structures, periods and sentences
- Identify and analyze simple forms (binary, ternary, etc) in a variety of textures
- Identify, analyze and compose a 12 bar 'riff' blues
