MUSC 2110: Applied Music Composition

Description
Individual instruction is given in the student's major performance area. Included in this area, in addition to private lessons, is a master class for all students in the performance area. A jury exam must be performed each term and forms part of the credit. 0:1:0

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Identify and describe the various facets of how to be a composer/songwriter
- Use basic computer music software (pro tools/cubase/reason/finale)
- Pitch songs and write for specific situations
- Think like a composer as opposed to thinking from the standpoint of a performer or a listener
- Identify and describe the life of a professional songwriter/composer
- Work with performers and groups to have their original works performed
- Conceptualize an original work and follow it to its completion
Prior Learning Assessment & Recognition (PLAR)
Show proficiency and documented experience in the knowledge and skills described in the learning outcomes of this course. Documentation will be reviewed by the Department Head and the course instructor.

Instructional Strategies
Private lesson with composition faculty. Each week, the instructor will examine and critique the student's compositional output. In addition, instructor may assign specific orchestration or composition projects for various media.
