Description
Includes the study of intervals, rhythms, melodic, harmonic and rhythmic dictation, progressions, chord recognition and simple song transcription. Examples are drawn from the jazz and pop repertoire. Transcribing is emphasized, root movement is stressed and method is based on a numerical system. 1:0:2

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Identify potential aural reception skills
- Identify tonal contexts both melodically and harmonically
- Identify and describe time flow
- Identify and describe basic chord progressions
- Identify and describe scales and sonorities
- Ascertain structure (form) by hearing chord progression units and their interaction with melody and other musical parameters
- Identify and describe common harmonic forms
- Support the development of aural acuity by singing patterns, bass lines and melodies and by performing rhythms and poly-rhythms
- Identify and describe common practice rhythmic notation

Course topics
- Arhythmic melodic sequences (pitch sets)
- Melodies with rhythm
- 7th sonorities (qualities) and altered chord sonorities (qualities)
- Pentatonic, bebop, modes of the jazz minor scale, whole tone and diminished scales
- Patterns in scales
- Chromaticisms within tonal contexts
- Jazz and pop harmonic formulas (e.g. I-vi-ii-V), exemplary song form
- Bass lines associated with chord progressions
- Jazz and pop song forms, latin music forms
- Triplets, compound metre, odd metre, mixed metre, odd rhythmic groupings
- Rhythm in two and three layer textures with syncopations and triplets
- Altered scale “tension” note with altered dominant sonorities
