Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Compose harmonic progressions and melodies in various jazz and blues styles
- Analyze harmonic progressions using the symbols of Chord Scale Theory (including Roman numerals)
- Analyze melodies and musical forms
- Identify, describe and analyze the relationship between chord scales and various vertical sonorities
- Identify, describe, analyze, and compose modulations, chord substitution, reharmonization, deceptive cadences, modal interchange, Coltrane substitutions, non-functional harmony, slash voicings, inversions, upper structure triads, polychords, chord shapes, hybrid chords, pedal points, ostinatos, equal division harmony, and modal systems.
