Description
Advanced Career Opportunities prepares the student for work in the music industry. Skills learned include the basic Microsoft Office suite, AFM, CBC, Socan and Recording Contracts, Copyright Law, interview techniques, publicity and marketing elements. Lectures, assignments and guest lectures will develop a student's comprehensive knowledge of the local and national classical and commercial music scenes.

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Acquire more in-depth knowledge of various facets of music and basic business administration
- Gain useful skills in the workings of basic office software such as Word, Excel, Power Point and Access
- Gain a working knowledge of contracts for the AFM, Equity, CBC, Socan and the recording industry
- Understand the basic intent and present definition of Copyright law
- Gain an insider’s view of the Vancouver commercial business ecology
- Hone interview and networking skills
- Examine contemporary fundraising techniques in the Arts
- Become familiar with basic conflict resolution issues in the artistic workplace
- Acquire the necessary skills in preparation for the upcoming internship term
Prior Learning Assessment & Recognition (PLAR)
1. Practical and/or written examinations that demonstrate ability at or above the final exam and learning outcomes of this course.
2. A successful interview with the Music Department Leader and one other regularized music faculty member
