Description
Preparatory Music (Summer) is an online course that improves skills in music theory and practical musicianship. Through written, aural, and vocal exercises, students develop fluency in reading and performing major, minor, pentatonic, and diatonic scales, rhythms, and melodies. Kodaly Solfege (relative-pitch, moveable-Do) and South Indian Solkattu (rhythm syllables) are the primary technical foundations. Preparatory Music (Summer) is for students who require review and practice of theory and musicianship skills for successful entry to the Music Diploma program. It is also available as a refresher course for domestic and international students with some musical background. This course is not suitable for beginners and permission of the department is required for enrolment.

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Read, write and perform simple diatonic melodies in Bass and Treble clefs
- Identify and write key signatures, intervals, diatonic scales, and triads
- Identify and write rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic cadences
- Analyze basic harmony in different musical idioms
- Perform basic conducting patterns
- Sing simple melodies, scales, and triads using note names, scale degrees and Kodaly Solfege
- Transcribe melodic and rhythmic dictations
- Perform basic simple and compound-meter rhythms
- Perform rhythms using South Indian Solkattu
