Description
This theory course introduces the profession of Practical Nursing and the BC legislation that informs the practice. The history of nursing and specifically, the evolution of Practical Nursing within the Canadian health care system will be discussed. The philosophy and foundational concepts of the Provincial Practical Nursing Program are explored.
As well, the legislation influencing Practical Nursing practice with clients experiencing chronic illness and those in complex care settings is examined. Specific professional issues such as responsibility, accountability, ethical practice, and leadership relevant to the Practical Nursing role in complex care are explored. Critical thinking and decision making specific to the care of the chronically ill and inter-professional practice will also be addressed.
This class is part of the full-time Access to Practical Nursing Program.

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Describe how legislation, professional standards, ethics and practice expectations inform nursing practice.
- Identify and discuss professional self-regulation and the implication for individual responsibilities and accountabilities of the Practical Nurse.
- Explain the role and responsibility of the British Columbia College of Nursing Professionals
- Describe how the philosophy of caring guides nursing practice.
- Use self-reflection and reflective journal writing to enhance learning and nursing practice.
- Cite some examples of self care strategies for the nurse.
- Discuss the partnership of nursing (Registered Nursing, Registered Psychiatric Nursing, Licensed Practical Nursing).
- Recognize and respect the diversity of other health care roles, responsibilities, and competencies.
- Identify and explain the influence of collaborative and inter-professional relationships on quality practice environments.
- Demonstrate the ability to access and assess current and relevant scholarly resources to prepare for nursing practice.
- Understand how cultural diversity, sensitivity and awareness influence professional practice
- Apply ethical decision-making principles to case studies.
- Discuss theories of nursing leadership
- Explain how legislation, professional standards, the code of ethics and practice expectations influences nursing practice in complex care.
- Discuss professional self-regulation and the implication for individual responsibilities and accountabilities of the Practical Nurse in complex care.
- Identify and apply leadership responsibilities of the Practical Nurse when working with unregulated health care providers.
- Describe the influence of collaborative and inter-professional relationships on a quality practice environment in complex care.
- Access others’ skills and knowledge appropriately through consultation.
- Demonstrate the ability to access and assess current, relevant, scholarly resources.
- Discuss and explain professional responsibility in terms of the cultural diversity and inclusivity of clients and colleagues in complex care.
- Apply ethical decision making to determine actions for ethical dilemmas in nursing practice with clients experiencing chronic illness.
- Demonstrate self-reflection and reflective journal writing to enhance learning and nursing practice.
- Identify key competencies associated with effective leadership, management and followership.

Instructional Strategies
Course guides provide direction of learning in preparation, in course activities and reflection of the content. The instructor acts as facilitator and expert to promote an environment conducive for learning through activities such as guided discussion, debate, audio-visual presentation, group activities, online activities, skill building exercises and simulation.
