Description
Building on Occupational Therapy 1 and 2 this course continues to focus on the practical skills required to successfully assist the Occupational Therapist and their clients. The course emphasizes occupational therapy treatments and interventions for clients with mental health conditions and clients with dementia and the promotion of independent activities of daily living (ADLs) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs).

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Use a behavioural approach in group treatment
- Use strategies to address common challenging behaviours
- Describe the principles of psychosocial rehabilitation
- Define trauma informed care and its relevance to rehabilitation
- Describe strategies to address challenging behaviours in clients with dementia
- Perform compensatory and remedial treatment techniques used for clients with dementia
- Describe environmental adaptations used to optimize functional independence for clients with dementia
- Demonstrate professional behaviour in a simulated practice environment

Instructional Strategies
Instructional strategies may include: Lecture, seminar, on-line learning, assignments, problem-based
learning, videos, small group discussions, and student-led review sessions. Lab activities comprise a
minimum of 50% of the course in order to optimize student learning of the practical skills required to work as an OTA.
