Description
This course addresses both Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy skills using an interdisciplinary approach. The course further develops the skills learned in the previous Occupational Therapy Assistant and Physical Therapy Assistant courses. The course focuses on providing treatment to clients within the community environment. Other topics include advanced wheelchair skills as well as specialized interventions including treatments for pediatric, bariatric and oncology clients.

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Explain the role of the OTA and PTA in the treatment of geriatric clients
- Explain the role of the OTA and PTA in the provision of home and community therapy services, and the challenges that arise from working in a community environment
- Use strategies and devices to optimize independence with ADLs and IADLs for clients based in the community
- Teach strategies to enhance clients’ community access and mobility
- Explain the role of the OTA and PTA in the treatment of oncology clients
- Outline the typical palliative care treatment process in BC
- Perform selected hydrotherapy treatment techniques for various client populations
- Perform selected interventions for paediatric clients
- Perform treatment interventions for clients who are bariatric

Instructional Strategies
Instructional strategies may include: Lecture, seminar, on-line learning, assignments, problem-based learning, videos, small group discussions, student-led review sessions, field trips and guest speakers. Lab activities comprise a minimum of 50% of the course in order to optimize student learning of the practical skills required to work as a PTA or an OTA.
