Description
This course introduces students to the regulations and legislation that inform the opticianry practice in British Columbia. Students will be provided with an in depth look at the Health Professions Act, Code of Ethics, and the Standards of Practice set out by the College of Opticians of BC (COBC). Students learn how to use analytical and critical thinking skills in dealing with ethics and professional practice.

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Distinguish between the roles and responsibilities of eye care professionals
- Adhere to privacy and confidentiality legislation, regulatory requirements and employer policies
- Describe the legal, ethical and professional responsibilities of opticians
- Integrate the Code of Ethics into professional practice as a basis for all decisions and actions
- Explain the importance of self regulation in relation to the standards of professional practice
- Evaluate the limitations of the dispensing optician role and when to seek guidance from or refer to another eye care team member
- Apply critical thinking skills and ethical principles to manage complex situations
- Serve as a patient advocate with other members of the eye care team
- Explain the process of obtaining informed consent
- Prepare and maintain documents and records in accordance with provincial legislation, standards and guidelines
