Description
This course introduces students to hospital pharmacy practice and the pharmacy technicians role in providing pharmacy services. Topics include policies and procedures, drug distribution systems, record keeping, compounding, purchasing and receiving. The lab component of the course focuses on dispensing and compounding skills.
This course is part of the full-time Pharmacy Technician Program.

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Describe the role of hospitals in providing health care services.
- Describe the organizational structure of a hospital.
- Describe the organizational structure of the pharmacy department.
- Discuss the role and responsibilities of the pharmacist.
- Discuss the role and responsibilities of the Pharmacy Technician.
- Process prescriptions, using a variety of drug distribution methods.
- Compound extemporaneous products.
- Perform purchasing and receiving functions.
- Participate in quality assurance programs
- Prepare reports
- Use hospital pharmacy computer systems
