Description
In this course, students will focus on the theory, best practice instructional methodology, and resources used for teaching reading skills to English Language Learners . This course also introduces course participants to a variety of approaches to integrated language teaching, reading assessment, and the potential uses of technology in the ESL/EFL reading classroom.

TESO 1101 taken prior or concurrently.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Summarize the theories underlying current methodology in teaching reading skills to English Language Learners (ELLs)
- Critique a reading textbook based on best practice methodology and materials design.
- Adapt print based materials to create level appropriate text for use with ELLs.
- Create a reading lesson plan based on best practice, relevant theory and current methodology.
- Choose tools (E.G. CLB framework, publishers’ guidelines, Fry Readability Graph, etc.) to ensure that reading class materials are appropriate for a range of levels and learning contexts.

Instructional Strategies
Students in the Teaching Reading course will experience an interactive and student-centred learning environment. Students are actively involved in small group learning and peer-learning events as well as independent course- related learning tasks. Throughout the course students are encouraged to self-reflect on their language teaching practice.

- Evaluating materials & sample lesson plans
- Assessing the level of reading materials using Canadian Language Benchmarks
- Working with literacy and low-level readers
- Developing appropriate reading activities, exercises and vocabulary questions

- Teaching and developing vocabulary through reading & lesson planning
- Extensive reading & reading activities and lesson ideas
