Description
In this course, students are introduced to the best practice methodology and resources needed to prepare non-native speakers of English for English-medium post secondary education. This course focuses on the specific instructional methodologies, techniques, and resources used to teach advanced level English as a Second or Other Language students. The course concentrates on the instructional approaches used to teach reading, composition , oral skills, literature and study skills.

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Summarize research on effective reading skills and strategies for academic reading.
- Assess an essay from an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) learner in a college preparation course for organization, content and grammatical accuracy.
- Create a thematic unit plan to teach college preparation, integrating academic reading/ writing, academic listening / speaking, vocabulary development, study skills and exam preparation.
- Assess EAP unit plans.
- Self-reflect on assessment experience and procedures.

Instructional Strategies
Students in the Teaching Academic English course will experience an interactive and student-centred learning environment. Students are actively involved in small group learning and peer-learning events as well as independent course related learning tasks. Throughout the course students are encouraged to self-reflect on their teaching practice.
