Campuses that embody innovation and respond to a changing city and region

We acknowledge that Vancouver Community College (VCC) is located on the traditional unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples who have been stewards of this land from time immemorial.

VCC’s Campus Plan will help guide decision making around the long-term development and functioning of VCC’s campuses including campus land use, open spaces and natural areas, transportation and parking.

The plan considers future VCC needs and aims to enhance the college’s physical environments to support learning, community and partnerships while responding to the context of the surrounding neighbourhoods.

In support of the Campus Plan vision, a series of six objectives were developed. These objectives served as the "backbones" of the plan while the concepts for the campuses emerged.

Campus Indigenization

VCC’s physical campuses will recognize, support, and celebrate past and present Indigenous learners. VCC will engage with Indigenous peoples and communities in meaningful ways, and advance recommendations in learning, campus planning, support services, and reconciliation.

VCC is a leader in the provision of programs for people of all abilities and backgrounds. VCC will strive for community members to continue to feel welcomed, safe, and engaged, 24/7. VCC’s diverse community will support an attitude that welcomes everyone and encourages community members to express their cultural identities and lived experiences.

Through thoughtfully designed spaces supported by cutting edge technology, VCC will support a wholistic approach to wellbeing for its students, employees, and surrounding communities.

VCC seeks to be a leader in environmental stewardship and, in doing so, provide ethical and forward-thinking learning opportunities for its students. This will be achieved by embracing innovations in energy generation, greenhouse gas reductions, water conservation, food production, waste reduction, social wellbeing, and cultural awareness.

Collaborative Opportunities

As geographic and symbolic doorways to their respective neighbourhoods, VCC’s campuses will serve as visible and tangible centres for collaboration. VCC will prioritize inclusiveness and community by building and maintaining learning-centered relationships both internally among its departments and externally with its diverse community.

Strategic Partnerships

VCC is committed to exploring a wide range of potential strategic partnerships to leverage prevailing land and building assets for the future in the most effective way possible. These strategic partnerships include working with employers, other academic institutions around sectoral collaboration, and with others to explore opportunities to creatively develop land and new buildings.

Central connection through the entire site improves permeability and provides opportunity for symbolic daylighting of China Creek as a wayfinding strategy.

Mid-block connections frame future development options and improve site circulation.

A strong connection of social spaces on campus strengthens the existing quality of the public realm, contributing to a sense of place and welcome on campus.

VCC will have a strong presence on both Broadway and Great Northern Way. The main entrance will shift formally from Broadway to Great Northern.

To improve wayfinding, circulation, and social spaces, a clear, central spine will be created from the ground floor entrance on West Pender St. through to Dunsmuir St.

A pedestrianised covered internal mid-block connection will create animation between the north and south ends of the campus, connecting spaces internally and also serving as a connection between Cambie St. and Hamilton St.

A plan that addresses the condition and age of existing buildings will inform the identification of development opportunities and create new academic and community partnerships.
