The Automotive Service Technician program is designed for the apprentice currently working in the automotive service industry.

Auto technician apprentice training at VCC is designed to meet the needs of both the apprentice and industry by providing a valuable and up-to-date training experience. Upon completion, apprentices return to industry with an increased, comprehensive skill set.

Technical training is divided into four levels, typically taken over four years. Level 1 covers shop safety, tools, suspension, brakes, steering and the fundamentals of an automobile frame. Level 2 advances the apprentice's skills in repairing a wide variety of engines. Level 3 provides the apprentice with competency in ignition, fuel and emission control systems. Level 4 completes the training with students developing skills in transmission and drive control systems.

Students train in classrooms and the automotive lab in VCC's facility at the Broadway campus. Instruction is provided through lectures to introduce theory and demonstrations to illustrate practical application of the theory. Students then have ample opportunity in the automotive labs to apply their skills and to demonstrate their knowledge. The college supplies tools and coveralls while the apprentice is a student at VCC. Students must supply their own safety equipment.

Program Description

E-PRENTICE

We have flexible learning offerings, giving apprentices more options to complete their training sooner and without having to take as much time off work. The Provincial Flexible Learning Mode (PFLM) utilizes online, mentoring and traditional face-to-face training methods to deliver technical training based on a multi level outcome program in a two-component structure.

Component 1 - During the first component (approximately 3 months), the apprentice remains at work and accesses media-rich online content when and where it is convenient. Apprentices collaborate online to create a rich and authentic learning environment. The workplace is also utilized during this component as the apprentice performs real tasks (Workplace Assignments) appropriate to provincial and national outcomes under the guidance of a qualified mentor.

Component 2 - In the second component, the apprentice attends their training institution (approximately 1-2 weeks) to review Component 1 theory, complete knowledge evaluations, further develop their practical skills, and then complete competency-based evaluations (counterpart to the Workplace Assignments) to ensure they are able to perform all of the required tasks. The amount of time an apprentice spends at their college - away from the workplace - may be reduced to as little as one week.

Topic

An apprenticeship is a system of training that combines work-based training with periods of formal practical and theoretical education. This theoretical instruction is provided by an approved training college or facility. Typically, apprentices take a short break from their employment once a year to complete their training. When an apprentice successfully completes a training program and attains the required number of work-based hours, he/she earns a certificate or ticket, and becomes a journeyperson in his or her trade.

Program Specific

Students must be registered with the Industry Training Authority (ITA) and have received an Apprentice Identification number and a Trade Worker Identification number (TWID). To determine whether you qualify for apprenticeship training see www.itabc.ca

New apprentices who have successfully completed an ITA approved training program can apply to the Industry Training Centre for credit towards the work based and technical training requirements of their apprenticeship. Often, successful completion of a trades program or pre-apprentice program significantly reduces the work based and/or training hours required for the trade.
