Program Description

Goals of this program include:

- demonstrating the highest standard of professional dance technique and training which encompasses ballet, modern, jazz and flamenco dance to professional entry level

- applying a comprehensive artistic dance movement language and repertoire

- applying basic knowledge of the dance industry in chosen practice role to include performance, administration, entrepreneurship and pedagogy

- applying pedagogical skills and concepts to educate students in the areas of traditional, ballet and modern dance training

- articulating professional dance goals and objectives

- utilizing information literacy, research skills to maintain currency

- exercising critical thinking skills to self and peer evaluate performance and instruction, mentor creativity and innovation to inspire projects, peers and students

Admission Requirements

General

VCC welcomes applications from Canadian citizens, permanent residents and international students.

Exceptions
Convention refugees as designated by the federal government;

Foreign live-in caregivers;

Individuals with work permits valid for at least one year, covering the duration of studies; or those with Approval in Principle letters from Citizenship and Immigration Canada;

Legal dependents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents (certain conditions apply);

Diplomats and their direct dependents;

International exchange students.

VCC will require proof of citizenship, residency, diplomatic or refugee status. Please see VCC's policy relating to admission for non-citizens and non-residents for more information.

As Vancouver Community College is a post-secondary institution committed to educating adult learners, applicants should be 18 years of age or older or a graduate of a secondary school.

Program Specific

SELECTION PROGRAM BY AUDITION ONLY

1) Grade 12 graduation or equivalent

2)Perform in an audition for the Admissions Committee chaired by the Artistic Director of Dance at Arts Umbrella, 1286 Cartwright Street, Granville Island (Auditions for the Fall program are held in the Spring)

3) Final applicants are chosen after a successful interview with the Artistic Director of Arts Umbrella

Students who are not successful, must re-apply

Post-secondary transcripts must be official. Photocopies or faxed transcripts will not be accepted. If you have foreign documents, your documents must be evaluated by the International Credential Evaluation Service. Recommended characteristics

Students in the Dance Diploma aspire to a career in professional dance in ballet and/or modern dance. Ideal students seek to develop an advanced level of technical and choreographic skill leading to more advanced professional training. Other students may wish to develop a comprehensive knowledge base in ballet and/or modern dance and arts management skills with an intent to launch private studios or join established training organizations.
