Legal Administrative Assistant

This specialist program is intended for graduates of the Administrative Assistant program as well as experienced administrative assistants wishing to work in the legal field. Students acquire the skills and knowledge to apply time management principles and set priorities to create, edit, store and retrieve legal documents and correspondence using computers. They also perform legal administrative assistant duties and procedures in the areas of general law, wills and estates, litigation, conveyancing, family law and corporate procedures. The main emphasis is on the development of practical skills including machine transcription. Students are required to work both in teams and on an individual basis. Theory is presented by means of lectures, demonstrations, videos and field trips as the subject requires. Program time is set aside for work experience where the student may be placed in a challenging work environment within a law firm or law-related office.

Career Prospects

Graduates may find employment in a variety of positions including junior legal administrative assistants or as a legal office support employee in any one of the following organizations: law firms, legal departments of large corporations, real estate companies, insurance companies, financial organizations and government agencies.

Legal Administrative Assistant graduation also qualifies candidates to register for courses through the VCC Paralegal Certificate and Paralegal Diploma program.

Admission Requirements

General

VCC welcomes applications from Canadian citizens, permanent residents and international students.

Exceptions
Convention refugees as designated by the federal government;

Foreign live-in caregivers;

Individuals with work permits valid for at least one year, covering the duration of studies; or those with Approval in Principle letters from Citizenship and Immigration Canada;

Legal dependents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents (certain conditions apply);

Diplomats and their direct dependents;

International exchange students.

VCC will require proof of citizenship, residency, diplomatic or refugee status. Please see VCC's policy relating to admission for non-citizens and non-residents for more information.

Program Specific

It is Vancouver Community College's desire to ensure that the potential student receives greater access to, and success in, the Legal Administrative Assistant Program at the Downtown campus. Therefore, the following guidelines, coupled with life experiences, are used to determine eligibility for entrance to the Legal Administrative Assistant Program.

Successful completion of the VCC Administrative Assistant program or equivalent program completed in the English Language*

OR

Minimum of one year's administrative assistant experience as verified by employer, with the following:

1) Grade 12 graduation, GED or equivalent

2) A certified tested keyboarding speed of 50 g.w.p.m. for five minutes with a maximum of five errors on a computer

3) Certified completion or experience using word processing software (WordPerfect or MS WORD preferred) as verified by an employer

Seats are offered to applicants who have met all admission requirements, on a first-qualified, first-served basis

*Applicants whose first language is other than English and who have not completed English 098/099, who are presenting foreign documents equivalent to Grade 12, must successfully complete a VCC English Language Assessment http://www.vcc.ca/assessments
