Food Service Careers (Adult Special Education)

This nine month program prepares students with a disability to work in the food service industry in the area of kitchen preparation. The program offers basic skill training while establishing effective employee behaviours that are necessary for success as an entry-level worker. The program consists of approximately 26 weeks of classroom/kitchen training and 12 weeks of supervised community work experiences matched to the student's interests and abilities.

Graduates are prepared to enter into competitive employment in the food service industry.

Admission Requirements

General

VCC welcomes applications from Canadian citizens and permanent residents.

Exceptions
Convention refugees as designated by the federal government;

Foreign live-in caregivers;

Individuals with work permits valid for at least one year, covering the duration of studies; or those with Approval in Principle letters from Citizenship and Immigration Canada;

Legal dependents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents (certain conditions apply);

Diplomats and their direct dependents;

VCC will require proof of citizenship, residency, diplomatic or refugee status. Please see VCC's policy relating to admission for non-citizens and non-residents for more information.


As Vancouver Community College is a post-secondary institution committed to educating adult learners, applicants should be 18 years of age or older or a graduate of a secondary school.

Program Specific

  • Interview with the Student Service Assistant for Students with Disabilities, phone 604.443.8451

  • Successful interview with two members of the CACE Department, which includes a hands-on assessment. Applicants may be asked to sign a release of information for any reports that will provide the program staff with further information

  • Diagnosis or history that identifies a difficulty with learning

  • Comfort in an alternative learning environment designed for students with disabilities

  • Previous career exploration that supports training in the food service industry

  • Possess a Grade 5 reading level. Lesser qualified applicants will be considered with instructors' approval

  • Possess the ability to perform basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division

  • Desire and willingness to work in a professional kitchen

  • Ability to travel independently to the college and workplace

  • Ability to attend classroom and practicum on a full-time basis (30 hours per week)

  • Ability to perform all program related tasks with strength and endurance

  • Good finger and hand dexterity for handling food and equipment

  • No uncontrolled seizures within the last two years

    • Stable living situation

    • Community support

    • Working knowledge of spoken English

    • Medication managed by student

    • No special needs such as toileting, uncontrolled seizures or severe behavioural problems

    • No behaviours or emotional problems that would significantly impair learning

    • Ability to work in a demanding and busy work environment under stress or pressure

    • Ability to stand for long periods of time

    • Ability to work flexible hours (early morning and late evenings) and weekend shifts
