ESL Classes in the Community -Literacy, Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced

All general ESL classes teach listening, speaking, reading, writing and grammar and take into consideration student needs and interests when planning the specific content for each course. Some classes focus on specific skills.
At the Beginner to Lower Intermediate levels the emphasis is on listening and speaking. At the Upper Intermediate and Advanced levels more emphasis is placed on reading, writing and grammar. Being able to speak English well is important at each level.
VCC offers ESL classes at various levels, times and locations in Vancouver and Burnaby.

Program Description
Literacy Levels
Literacy classes are for students who have few listening and speaking skills in English and cannot read or write English. Students learn basic English.
Beginner Levels
These classes teach English for everyday use such as work, shopping, Canadian life or other situations which interest the students in the class. Students practice speaking and listening with some reading and writing.
Intermediate Levels
Intermediate level classes help students improve listening, speaking, reading, writing and grammar skills. Students study topics and activities appropriate to their needs and interests. Students completing intermediate levels may qualify for some ESL Career Training programs at VCC.
Advanced Levels
These classes provide students with a high level of English listening, speaking, reading, writing and grammar. Students participate in a wide variety of activities and topics according to their needs and interests. Students completing these levels may qualify for entry into VCC academic, professional or career programs.
Intensive Skills Courses
Intensive classes like Listening and Speaking or Reading and Writing are for students who want to improve specific skills, which are studied in-depth. Topics of interest to students are included in these courses.

Admission Requirements
General
VCC welcomes applications from Canadian citizens, permanent residents and international students.
Exceptions

Convention refugees as designated by the federal government; Foreign live-in caregivers; Individuals with work permits valid for at least one year, covering the duration of studies; or those with Approval in Principle letters from Citizenship and Immigration Canada; Legal dependents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents (certain conditions apply); Diplomats and their direct dependents; International exchange students. VCC will require proof of citizenship, residency, diplomatic or refugee status. Please see VCC's policy relating to admission for non-citizens and non-residents for more information. |
