Denturist

This twenty-month diploma program leads to a career in the profession of Denturism. Graduates of this program acquire the specialized knowledge, skills and professional attributes to assist their patients in attaining and maintaining oral health. This includes provision of complete dentures, partial dentures, overdentures and dentures over implants. After completion of a post-graduate externship, graduates are eligible to take the licensing examination of the College of Denturists of BC.

Graduates of this program will have acquired the knowledge, skills and attitudes to reliably demonstrate the ability to:
-Apply provincial and national codes of conduct when providing denturist service
-Develop a well managed business practice within denturist settings and the community
-Use strategies for systematic inquiry to justify and/or revise denturist services
-Make decisions regarding denturist services that reflect critical thinking, time management and problem solving
-Integrate pertinent theoretical knowledge of anatomy, physiology, morphology and pathology into the provision of denturist practice
Integrate principles of physics, chemistry, general science and properties of materials associated with the fabrication of dental prosthetic devices and appliances
-According to prescription (in collaboration with other members of the dental profession) design, fabricate, modify and repair removable partial dentures
In a clinic setting assess patient's needs, diagnose, treatment plan, design, fabricate, modify and repair, and monitor removable prostheses for patients
-Operate and maintain dental laboratory equipment in accordance with standard safety and maintenance procedures, WHMIS and infection control protocol
-Produce clear and accurate written and oral communications for the public and other professionals regarding denturist issues and services
-Work effectively as a team member, taking responsibility for decisions and actions pertaining to denturist services
-Carry out all duties in an ethical and professional manner
-Demonstrate a commitment to quality denturist service through self-evaluation and life long learning

Career Prospects

Graduates of the program are eligible to sit the College of Denturist Licensing Examination after completing the work experience following the two-year in-school program. Graduates are able to provide complete and partial denture treatment that meets the technical, anatomical, biological and physiological needs of the edentulous and semi edentulous patient.

Admission Requirements

General

VCC welcomes applications from Canadian citizens, permanent residents and international students.

Exceptions
Convention refugees as designated by the federal government;

Foreign live-in caregivers;

Individuals with work permits valid for at least one year, covering the duration of studies; or those with Approval in Principle letters from Citizenship and Immigration Canada;

Legal dependents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents (certain conditions apply);

Diplomats and their direct dependents;

International exchange students.

As Vancouver Community College is a post-secondary institution committed to educating adult learners, applicants should be 18 years of age or older or a graduate of a secondary school.

Program Specific

Admission to the Denturist Program is a competitive selection basis

1) Grade 12 graduation, GED or equivalent, including Academic English 12*, Human Biology 12 and either Math 11 or Physics 11, all with a C+ or better

* Proof of English Language Proficiency AND ICES evaluation (toll free 1.866.434.9197).

2) Two Career Investigations/Summaries

SELECTION PROCESS

3) All qualified candidates take the Industrial Psychology International (IPI) Aptitude test and the eight applicants with the highest combined academic and aptitude test scores are offered seats

Upon Acceptance:
4) Completion of First Aid and CPR-Level C training

5) Proof of a negative TB skin test or chest xray. For further information about Health requirements click here

Applicants should note that a criminal records check is required for licensure with the College of Denturists of BC. If this is a concern, they are encouraged to contact that College prior to, or during, their application process.

Applicants meeting the requirements are scheduled for an aptitude test which is administered by the College.

Additional Information

Health Requirements:

- If you have back, hand or shoulder problems, they may be affected by the physical demands of the profession. Prospective students with respiratory problems may be affected by dust from grinding and polishing, and/or odours and fumes from materials used. Those with sensitive skin and conditions such as sensitivity to latex may also be affected by some materials used in denturist practice.
