Dance Diploma


Dance, professionally. In partnership with Arts Umbrella, this program demonstrates the highest standard of professional dance technique and training in a comprehensive artistic dance movement language and repertoire, which includes ballet, modern, jazz and flamenco. Goals of this program include:

  • Demonstrating the highest standard of professional dance technique and training which encompasses ballet, modern, jazz and flamenco dance to professional entry level
  • Applying a comprehensive artistic dance movement language and repertoire
  • Applying basic knowledge of the dance industry in chosen practice role to include performance, administration, entrepreneurship and pedagogy
  • Applying pedagogical skills and concepts to educate students in the areas of traditional, ballet and modern dance training
  • Articulating professional dance goals and objectives
  • Utilizing information literacy, research skills to maintain currency
  • Exercising critical thinking skills to self and peer evaluate performance and instruction, mentor creativity and innovation to inspire projects, peers and students

General

VCC welcomes applications from Canadian citizens and permanent residents.

As Vancouver Community College is a post-secondary institution committed to educating adult learners, applicants should be 18 years of age or older or a graduate of a secondary school.

Please note that you must submit official transcripts and educational documents to support your application; unfortunately, we cannot accept photocopies or fax versions.

Program Specific

Missing prerequisites? VCC offers courses in Adult Upgrading and English as an Additional Language to help you meet your goals.

Applicants are selected by audition only.

  • Grade 12 graduation or equivalent required
  • Perform in an audition for the admissions committee chaired by the artistic director of dance at Arts Umbrella, 1286 Cartwright Street, Granville Island (auditions for the fall program will be held Sunday, January 29 or Sunday, April 2, 2017; for more information please review the audition requirements. audition requirements)
  • Final applicants are chosen after a successful interview with Arts Umbrella. Students who are not successful, must re-apply.
  • Post-secondary transcripts must be official. Photocopies or faxed transcripts will not be accepted

Recommended Characteristics:


Students aspire to a career in professional dance in ballet and/or modern dance. Ideal students seek to develop an advanced level of technical and choreographic skill leading to more advanced professional training. Other students may wish to develop a comprehensive knowledge base in ballet and/or modern dance and arts management skills with an intent to launch private studios or join established training organizations.

At the time of acceptance, a $300 non-refundable deposit will be required to hold your seat if accepted more than two months before the start date of the program. Full payment of the first installment will be required within two months before the start date.
