Samsung Tech Institute - Appliance Repair Technician - Entry Pathway

VCC is home to the Samsung Tech Institute, the only Samsung-certified appliance repair trainer in Western Canada. The Samsung Tech Institute provides a new and exclusive framework of knowledge that will directly impact the careers of graduates. Learn through practical training on the latest appliances to operate, diagnose, and service Samsung products. Successful students receive a certification from Samsung Canada and an Award of Achievement from VCC. This group-based training program is ideal for those interested in entering the appliance repair industry.

PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:

  1. Use, operate and care for Samsung appliances including but not limited to: refrigerators (2 door bottom mount, 2 door side by side, 3 door French, 4 door French, and 4 door), Washers (top load and front load), dryer, dishwasher (basic model and water wall), stoves (free standing, slide in induction, and radiant element stove), and counter top microwaves
  2. Safely use testing meters to measure and calculate amperage, voltage and resistance in order to assist in proper diagnostic operation.
  3. Explain, differentiate, and test a variety of motors, compressors, pumps, and solenoid used in Samsung appliances
  4. Safely troubleshoot circuits for home electricity and appliance applications
  5. Read and follow wiring diagrams, temperature charts, and sensor documentation in order to troubleshoot Samsung domestic appliances
  6. Troubleshoot pre-error appliances
  7. Execute diagnostic procedures on domestic appliances in accordance with health and safety standards
  8. Operate all cycles of the 6 major domestic appliances
  9. Program all diagnostic self-tests for the 6 major domestic appliances
  10. Fully disassemble all 6 major domestic appliances
  11. Fully reassemble all 6 major domestic appliances
  12. Assure full functionality after reassembly of all 6 major domestic appliances
  13. Diagnose and troubleshoot error codes and issues for all 6 major domestic appliances
  14. Write the BC Gas Appliance Service Certificate of Qualification Examination (Formerly Class C) offered offsite for Fall 2017 term

PROGRAM DURATION

The Samsung Tech Institute - Appliance Repair Technician - Entry Pathway includes 338 hours of instruction taught full time in 14 weeks.

 

EVALUATION OF STUDENT LEARNING

Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory based on quizzes, class participation, and final exam
70% overall grade is required to receive a satisfactory grade

Recommended Characteristics:

 

To be successful in this course students must have:

  • Good mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity
  • Good eyesight and colour vision
  • The ability to pay careful attention to details
  • Strength, stamina and the ability to use proper lifting techniques for items in excess of 25 kilograms
  • A willingness to keep up to date with changing technology
  • The ability to figure things out on their own
  • A neat appearance
  • The ability to deal with customers in a courteous and tactful manner

This course prepares students to write the British Columbia Safety Authority (BCSA) Gas Appliance Service Certificate of Qualification Examination (Formerly the Class "C" C of Q). Topics in this course include service of residential and light commercial gas appliances up to an input of 82kW, while employed by a licensed gas contractor or under an appropriate permit. It does not prepare students to do work not covered under the Gas Appliance C of Q such as installation of new or replacement appliances, the replacement of heat exchangers, the installation of gas piping or the repair or installation of venting.
