Explore the history and culture of Latin jazz with the John Korsrud Quartet

Vancouver Community College's (VCC) Music department proudly introduces "Off Broadway", a five-concert series exploring the history, culture, and timeless sounds of jazz and classical music. Each concert will begin with a 10-minute lecture followed by a 45-minute concert featuring VCC’s music faculty members.

Concert #2 - John Korsrud Quartet with introduction by Dr. Deirdre Morgan

This concert will explore John's love affair with Latin jazz and the music from the Caribbean, with high-energy music by Eddie Palmieri, Michel Camilo and others. The concert will feature one of Canada's top latin-jazz drummers, Raphael Geronimo, Latin-jazz specialist and VCC alumna Niho Takase on piano, as well as VCC Music Department Leader, Laurence Mollerup on bass.

John Korsrud is the recipient of the 2012 City of Vancouver Mayor's Arts Award, the 2015 Canada Council Victor Martyn Lynch-Staunton Award, and is the leader of the 18-piece new music/ jazz ensemble, The Hard Rubber Orchestra, a group he formed in 1990. In 2010, John performed on his own trumpet concerto, Come to the Dark Side, at New York’s Carnegie Hall, commissioned and performed by The American Composers Orchestra. John's diverse playing experiences has seen him play with international improvisors such as George Lewis, Anthony Braxton, Barry Guy and Kenny Wheeler, as well as The Vancouver Symphony and Vancouver rock bands such as 54-40 and DOA.
