In perhaps the most moving of many special moments from Bakery Showcase, Maliha Khaku of Vancouver Community College’s baking program achieved first place in the Mother’s Day Celebration Student Cake-Decorating Competition sponsored by Dawn Foods!

The talented, tenacious baker presented a memorable showstopper tribute to her mom – who attended the show with her!

Showcase was honoured to have as judges celebrated pastry chef Bruno Feldeisen of the Great Canadian Baking Show, Dalana Fleming of The Cake and the Giraffe custom cake shop in Vancouver, and Dawn’s talented technical chef Austin D’Souza.

Entries were judged on the following criteria:

  • Skill and precision of Techniques (20 pts)
  • Originality and Creativity (20 pts)
  • Number and Difficulty of Techniques (15 pts)
  • Proportion and Balance (15 pts)
  • Use of Colour (15 pts)
  • Overall Eye Appeal/Judge’s Discretion (15 pts)

Thank you to Dawn and to Aron Weber of Vancouver Island University baking and pastry arts program and Laurie Vestergaard of Vancouver Community College baking and pastry program for helping organize this exciting display of talent!
